Fossil plants of the severn coalfield and their biostratigraphical significance

By: Cleal, C.J.
Material type: ArticleArticleDescription: 553-568pp ; Illustration; ; Photos.Subject(s): Fossil plants - Europe | Floral studies | Coalfield | Paleobotany | Biostratigraphy | Paleozoic | Carboniferous In: Geological magazine : Vol. 123 Iss. 1-6 Year. 1986Summary: The Carboniferous fossil plants from the Severn Coalfield are described for the first time. They indicate a late Westphalian D age for these strata (Lobatopteris vestita Biozone) and are clearly similar to floras reported from the Forest of Dean Coalfield. There is also evidence that they can be correlated with the Grovesend Beds in the eastern part of the South Wales Coalfield. It seems that the start of sedimentation in the Forest of Dean and Severn coalfields is related to Leonian (late Hercynian) earth movements.
